DP Year 1 English A: Language & Literature

English

The DP Year 1 (Grade 11) English A: Language & Literature curriculum is structured around three main areas of exploration—readers, writers and texts; time and space; and intertextuality—guiding students through the study of both literary and non-literary works . Students develop critical analysis skills by examining how language choices, cultural contexts, and text types affect meaning, with Higher Level (HL) students studying additional texts and preparing for the 1,200–1,500 word HL essay component . The course integrates Paper 1 (guided textual analysis of unseen non-literary texts), Paper 2 (comparative essay on literary works) and the Individual Oral (internal assessment) which requires students to explore a global issue through one literary and one non-literary text . Assessment preparation reflects the updated 2026 syllabus, including revised Paper 2 criteria and reduced text requirements (7 for SL, 10 for HL).
