DP Year 1 Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches

Mathematics

The DP Year 1 (Grade 11) Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (AA) curriculum is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL), with SL focusing on developing algebraic manipulation and mathematical reasoning across five core topics: Number and Algebra, Functions, Geometry and Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, and Calculus . The HL course extends these topics with additional depth, covering complex numbers, vectors, advanced proof techniques like proof by induction, and more rigorous treatment of differential and integral calculus, preparing students for further study in mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences . Both levels emphasize the ability to construct, communicate, and justify correct mathematical arguments, with assessment consisting of three examination papers at HL (Papers 1-3) and two papers at SL, plus an internal assessment (IA) exploration worth 20% of the final grade . Paper 1 at both levels is completed without a calculator to test pure analytical skills, while Paper 2 allows calculator use; HL students additionally sit Paper 3, which contains extended-response problem-solving questions.
