DP Year 1 Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation

Mathematics

The DP Year 1 (Grade 11) Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation (AI) curriculum is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). It is designed for students who are interested in developing their mathematics for describing our world and solving practical problems, with a strong emphasis on using technology to explore mathematical models and real-world contexts . The course is organized into five core topics—Number and Algebra, Functions, Geometry and Trigonometry, Probability and Statistics, and Calculus—with the HL course including significant additional depth in areas like complex numbers, matrices, eigenvectors, graph theory, advanced hypothesis testing, and further calculus . The syllabus encourages an inquiry-based, concept-driven approach where students learn to solve real-world problems, construct and communicate mathematical arguments, and interpret conclusions . Assessment consists of two external examination papers at SL (each 1.5 hours) and three papers at HL, plus an Internal Assessment (IA) exploration worth 20% of the final grade, where students independently investigate a real-world issue of their choice using mathematical modeling and data analysis . This pathway particularly suits students interested in pursuing university studies in fields like economics, social sciences, business, medicine, or data science where practical application of mathematics is valued.
