DP Year 1 Psychology

Psychology

The DP Year 1 (Grade 11) Psychology curriculum, updated for first teaching in 2023, is organized around three core approaches to understanding behavior: biological, cognitive, and sociocultural . Students explore these approaches through the lens of four key contexts—Health and Well-being, Human Development, Human Relationships, and Learning and Cognition—while also developing essential skills in research methodology, ethical considerations, and data analysis . The course emphasizes an inquiry-based approach where students engage with classic and contemporary psychological studies, design and conduct practical investigations, and begin planning their Internal Assessment (IA)—a research proposal or experimental study that accounts for 20-25% of their final grade . Higher Level (HL) students additionally explore deeper content and prepare for an extra examination paper, while all students develop critical thinking and evaluative skills essential for understanding the complexities of human behavior.
