Business StudiesGrade 12

The IEB Grade 12 Business Studies curriculum is the culmination of the FET Phase, preparing students for the final National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination through a comprehensive understanding of business environments, ventures, roles, and operations. The final assessment consists of a single three-hour examination paper worth 300 marks, divided into Section A (100 marks covering multiple-choice, true/false, and terminology questions), Section B (150 marks with three shorter-format questions based on case studies or sources), and Section C (50 marks requiring one extended business report), with cognitive levels weighted across knowledge (30%), understanding (15%), application (15%), analysis (10%), synthesis (10%), and evaluation/problem-solving (20%) . The curriculum content is structured across key topics including the macro, market, and micro environments analysed through tools such as environmental scanning, SWOT analysis, and Porter's Six Forces Model . Students study the eight business functions (purchasing, production, marketing, human resources, financial, public relations, administrative, and general management) and engage with contemporary themes including Corporate Social Responsibility, the King Code on Corporate Governance, triple-bottom-line reporting (People, Planet, Profit), sustainability practices, and the FTSE/JSE Social Responsibility Investment Index . School-Based Assessment contributes 100 marks and includes a preliminary examination, controlled tests replicating exam sections, and two tasks chosen from options such as research tasks, media reviews, oral/debates, business simulations, case study analysis, or entrepreneurship projects.
